Els and Erwin, from Belgium, visited Tanzania in the summer of 2004
Booked trip: visit Moshi and the Materuni village + waterfalls, on the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro
Costumer story:
We got to know Mako in a very funny way. When we arrived in Dar Es Salaam, we were asked by a young guy to follow him because he knew a good safari company. Being suspicious as we Belgians are, we declined his offer and continued our own way.
Later, on the bus to Moshi, we started a conversation with a very nice man. He told us very much about the country and places to visit and also gave us local contacts to visit because we wanted to taste local life.
This man was Mako, and turned out the be the employer of the young guy who offered us a safari when we landed! What a coincidence!
Anyway. When we were in Moshi, we got a personal guide Philip. Philip turned out to be Mako's brother (indeed, it is a family business).
Following the advise of Philip, we visited Materuni village (known for its coffee) and the waterfalls. They are absolutely beautiful! Reaching 67m in the sky, the water comes crashing down in a small pool - which allows for swimming. I went swimming, my girlfriend not... It was cold, but worth the experience! The setting was also breathtaking as the sun was illuminating everything with its golden shine.
Definitely something worth to visit.
And Mako kept all his promisses (transportation, guide, price,...) He missed one thing though. He said the weather forecast was good, but the day started with rain. But hey, driving up a slippery mountain in an old african public transport bus going from one side of the road to the other is an adventure on its own!!
And when we reached the village, the sun started shining anyway! What a trip!!
Gordon, from England, visited Tanzania and Zanzibar
Booked trip: miscellaneous
Costumer story:
I ended up in dar with a couple of weeks to play with and no idea what i was going to do. By the first night I had met mako through the YMCA and was sorted for 2 weeks in Zanzibar where his friend sorted us out for every thing for the whole 2 weeks. Then Mako had organised a safari to Ngorongoro crater via Moshi and booked for three even though there were only two of us at the time - very trusting of him! The safari was the funniest and most interesting one I went on,the guide-alphie,was the funniest chap to guide us and joined in with our humour as we drove round telling everyone where the tigers were! He's also the only person I've met to purr at a Rhino! From the safari, Mako got us on a bus to Mombasa which, judging from the amount of volume and kiswahili spoken, we would have stuggled to do.The guys made life easy, and enjoyable. You could not spend your money in a better way!
Paola from the USA, visited Tanzania in the summer of 1999
Booked trip 1: 2 Nights / 3 Days Mount Meru
Booked trip 2: 5 Nights / 6 Days Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngoro Crater
Costumer story:
Soon I spent the summer of 1999 living in Moshi, Tanzania while doing a fellowship at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center. A couple of friends (Julian and Lizzy) that had lived there the year before had told me about their Tanzanian friend Mako. I ran into Mako in downtown Moshi, as he speaks very good English and is approachable and friendly. He ended up setting up some great trips for me.
I especially loved the safari. If you visit Tanzania you need to see Ngorongo Crater - it is spectacular. It is everything I dreamed a safari would be and more.
Mt. Meru is the second tallest peak in Tanzania, about 15,000 feet tall. Climbing this volcano was a unique experience. It offers great exposure away from the crowds. There was a lot of wildlife at the base. It is also a good way to acclimatize for Mt. Kilimanjaro. You can climb Mt. Meru, leave one rest day free, and then climb Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Back then Mako didn't arrange trips to Zanzibar (as far as I know), and my roommate TaiAsha and I headed over to the island on our own. Zanzibar is lovely, the seafood they sell at night on the shore is delicious, and the Muslim influence on the architecture is fascinating. However, with only a guide book, we felt disoriented and didn't know what to do. Our hotel turned out to be in a dimly lit area near the docks. And as two young women on our own, we got a lot of unwanted attention from groups of young men. We felt unsafe and left early, after a couple of days. If I ever get to visit Tanzania again, I would definately return to Zanzibar but this time I would book it with Mako.
Having a good guide makes all the difference. I highly recommend Mako Tours and Safari. Hakuna matata!
